Pioneers of the thermometer

By the usage of certain materials that change in some way when heated or cooled,thermometers measure temperature.Thermometers are calibrated in temperature units of either Celcius or Fahrenheit.

Santorio Santorio
Santorio invented the thermoscope and was the first to apply a numerical scale to his thermoscope.The thermscope was the precursor to the thermometer.

Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit
The German physicist who invented the alcohol thermometer in 1709 and the mercury thermometer in 1714.He introduced the Fahrenheit scale in 1724.

Anders Celcius
The Swedish physicist responsible for the Celcius Scale in 1742.The term celcius was adopted by the international conference on weights and measures in 1948.His temperature scale was based on the melting and boiling points of water and is used in most scientific work to this day.

Lord William Thomson Kelvin
The Scottish physicist who invented the Kelvin scale in 1848.The Kelvin scale measures the ultimate extremes of hot and cold.He developed the Second law of Thermodynamics and the dynamic theory of heat.
